Pfizer has entered into a licensing agreement with the National Pharmaceutical Organisation, the country’s largest generic pharmaceutical manufacturer, for the development of an anti-impotence drug, Viagra.
Pfizer, which was established in the 1980s to provide a new alternative to the fast-acting Viagra, is now seeking an exclusive licence for the drug for sale.
The company is seeking approval to produce the drug in the country’s capital cities, including Gauteng, Johannesburg and Durrington, South Africa. It will also be launching the drug in the country’s capital of Johannesburg on 25 May.
“We are very excited about this potential opportunity to produce and sell Viagra as a prescription medication in the country.” Mr. Pfizer CEO Ian Read said.
The company will also manufacture and supply Viagra in its home country of Nigeria and Ghana. Pfizer is also developing a similar drug, Viagra Connect, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in women.

Viagra has a maximum allowed dose of 5 mg (0.5 mg), but not more than 1 mg per day. This is because it is more effective when taken in larger amounts.
“In the United States, the maximum daily dose of Viagra is 1.5 mg, but not more than 1.5 mg per day,” said Pfizer president and CEO David Carr.
Mr. Read said the company had submitted a plan to the FDA in the United States to produce and market the drug in the country’s capital cities.
“Pfizer was established to provide a new alternative to the fast-acting Viagra, but we believe this could benefit the country’s sexual health,” Mr. Read said.
“We are committed to bringing Viagra to millions of people, and we look forward to working with the FDA in the coming years to bring the drug to those who use it.”
The product is still under development, and the drug will not be marketed in South Africa.
The company has already launched a website,in which it has information about Viagra, and it has also been selling other erectile dysfunction treatments including the one it is developing for the country.
